Grand Opening
Celebration and the Park has a name
The park peaked at 100 people on a day that had threatened rain all morning. Although there was never an official count, people were guessing as many as 200 showed up to the event. President Dave Butcher lead the ribbon cutting ceremony with an announcement the the name of the park will be the Saugeen Shores Rotary Skate Park in appreciation of the $50k donation by the Port Elgin Rotary Club. Pictures of the grand opening and park will be on this website soon, keep watching.

Skate Park construction ready to begin!!! A team from UCC, the company contracted to build the skate park arrived today to prepare the site for construction. The crew is scheduled to arrive next week and construction should last about 6 weeks. That means a full summer of board/bike/bladeing on the new park. We all need to do our part to make sure there are no delays. That means stay off the site and don’t let anyone else go on the site. The entire skate park site will be monitored by a high resolution video camera to identify anyone causing damage but any damage will cause delays. Let’s all Get On Board and make sure construction goes ahead without any delays. We’ve waited 3 ½ years, we can all wait a few more weeks. Thanks to everyone for your hard work, support, and patience.

Update -
Sorry for not updating this sooner. Things are still quite busy here at
Saugeen Shores. We've had a successful Golf tournament and the Mega Garage
Sale was a big hit again this year. Thanks to Scott Wark and Mary Lynn
Barron who were the event leaders and to all the volunteers and donators.
Tonight at Town Council after much discussion, a motion was put forward to
put the plans to tender. This is a huge step in the development of the
park.
The town has offered to
lend the committee capital with the understanding that the designers would
need to modify the park to come within the original 14000sq ft. to
accommodate site conditions and budgets. |

First Sunny Day dampens fundraiser -
+28 C and Sunny, we couldn't have had a worse day for the Another eXtreme
Day at the Movies. It was the first real nice day of spring and we didn't
hit our targets for attendance. No one could blame anyone for taking the
day off. For the people who did attend the event rocked with great flicks and buckets of prizes handed out by Brett Martin with Martins Bike Shop. Thanks to all who attended. Special note for next year..... I think we'll hold it in February :-)

YUK YUK's Sold out -
Where does the time go... I can't believe it's been this long since I've
updated the news section of the website. Seems everyone has had to take a
bit of a break to work on personal things. I know the recent restart of
Bruce units 1 and 2 has taken a bite out of my skatepark campaign time. But what better way to celebrate spring than with a huge success of a fundraiser by the committee. This event was certainly a sleeper, rolling into the last week with only half the ticket sold. The WHAM, we couldn't get them to Ralph's fast enough. The show was awesome, we had some seating difficulties and the bar line up never seemed to die down but thanks to the efforts of all the volunteers the night was a complete success. Tony Krolo opened as the MC and was followed by "Where are all the Brothers" Roy Daye. Terry McClurrin wrapped up the show with some world class improv. Not one of them missed the chance to poke fun at the country bumkins of Saugeen Shores and we loved them for it. All told there was another $6k raised for the park! Do I hear a second show coming? Stay tuned Folks.............

Stuff -
What a summer folks.. wholly cow were we ever busy. I just got my computer
up and running again and thought that I should check in on the news to see
where I left off. August 5th! Good lord! Anyhow, to summarize,
The FNJ's were a big hit and we have Grey Bruce Health Services to thank for that. They sponsored the events. We just got through Pumpkin fest where the guys from Chesley Paintball came out of retirement and helped us out. Donations are coming in thanks to Lee's founding families campaign. The idea is that Lee wants to get 1000 families to donate $100 and he'll do the polar bear plunge. Lee has full support from Dave and myself. We'll be behind him all the way (with St. Johns on scene). Corporate sponsorship is up but we are still waiting on a few big players to step up to the plate. No names but I think you know who you are :-) Our new line of
Swag is
out and was a huge hit at Pumpkin fest. |

2006 Paisley Skate Competition -
What a perfect day for this event, Mother Nature was sure cooperative.
Thanks to Russell Ellis of Xzube Sports for an invitation to attend and
sell some swag. Our skater participation was a little smaller than last
year but there were a few committee people there. We'll do better next
year. Here are some
pictures of the event. |

fortunate thing is that we still have 7 weeks left to shred it up. Special

Knights |

The PLEX Board Bike Blade-a-thon was
another terrific fundraiser for the group. The unofficial total raised was
around $2700.00. Lee Olinskie was the top pledge earner followed close by
Serena Butcher and Tyler Essiembre. Congratulations to all and thanks to
Beach'in for the prizes. There was more emphasis on the biking this year with some skinnies, drops and teeters. Everyone had a great time. Here are some pictures of the event with more to come. Most of the stunts have been shipped out to
the Coliseum in Southampton to get ready for the Friday Night Jams
starting 16JUN2006. Hope to see you there! |

An eXtremely
fun fundraiser:
Over 115 people showed up to Port Elgin Cinemas to experience an
eXtreme Day at the Movies. The audience Ohh'd Aww'd and cheered to the two
skate boarding movies and the premier of ROAM, a 35mm epic mountain bike
movie. Brett Martin from Martins bike shop was on location showing off the latest in Free ride, downhill and trials bikes. He gave away dozens of prizes through out the event. I've even been told by a couple of Dads that their kids want Mountain Bikes now :-) Over 40 people showed up from the big city to watch their local heros rip it up on the big screen with Xzube Sports new skate boarding film. Russell Ellis president of Xzube Sports was on edge while we experience a bit of technical difficulty but was beaming ear to ear thanks to the quick response of Port Elgin Cinemas owners who got us back on track. All said and done.. another $819.00 was raised for the park. From some of the feedback recieved, there seems to be a desire to have similar events. Keep watching... Thanks to all who attended. Special thanks to Martins Bike Shop, Xzube Sports and Port Elgin Cinemas for Sponsoring the event. Check out the pics here.

Mike Mandel
rocks the CAW:
Sides were splitting with laughter as Mike Mandel Canada's foremost
hypnotist demonstrated how we all live in a trance at one time or another.
We all watched in amazement as he had his volunteers believing belts were
snakes and the audience was nude, hilarious! This fundraiser was an
absolute success with a combined effort from all the committee members and
help with a $1,200 donation from OPG and $4,000 from Bruce Telecom. All
said and done, it contributed $8,000.00 into the skate park fundraising
efforts. There was a HUGE announcement by Bruce Telecom... $20,000.00
HUGE. Bruce Telecom pledged twenty thousand dollars towards the
construction of the park. WOW.. |

Did we hear
$75,000.00?:
How many ways can you say thanks. Today we have officially
announced that the Town of Saugeen Shores has kicked in $75,000.00 of the
the next 2 years. An overwhelming amount that was a much needed shot in
the arm for the committee. Thank you Mayor Mark Kraemer and all council
members who have supported this since day one. |

Hot times at
the Beach Party:
Over 80 people turned out to rock the Plex to the sound of the
Rockerfellers Saturday night. Thanks to event organizer Russell Ellis from
xzube sports,
a lot of people got to forget about the long winter for a few hours and
just kick back and have a good time.

Parade #2:
Wow.. Just Wow.. The second parade was
definitely the most eventful. The snow and wind made it quite a challenge
but we managed to pull it off. Our mirror and Woody the snowman didn't
even make it a block before succumbing to the elements. That sail we made
on the back of the ramp almost blew Daver and Ryan off the back of the
float. We made it through the rest of the parade OK but the ramp took a
dive while we were returning to the Shular's for teardown. Be sure to check out the

Parade #1:
Mary Lynn Barron took charge and incorporated Tyler's theme
idea into a awesome float for the Port Elgin Santa Claus Parade. There are
so many people to thank for this project coming together. First in line is
Rick Shular who offered the trailer, truck and generator. Next is the
Essiembres who let us use their house as Float Central and at times
resembled a war zone with all the activity. Paul M. supplied some material
and organizational skills and Andrea put her imagination to the test with
some added float flair. Special thanks to Jillian our modern day Snow
White, Sherry our apple wielding Witch and Tyler, Tyler, Ryan, Alex,
Graham, Lucas, Jake and the rest of our boarders for facing the cold and
putting on their best for the crowd. Be sure to check out the

New Line
Presentation:
Project Coordinator, Trevor Morgan from New Line
Skateparks Inc. Calgary and Ariel Stagni the company's Ontario representative
put on a stunning presentation for kids and their parents Monday night. Scott Wark kicked off the night with a bang when he presented the committee with a donation cheque for $1500.00 from Wark Milk Transport. This is an outstanding and generous offer from a community business and a symbol of the support that we have from the business community. Thank you Wark Milk Transport. The presentation lasted about an hour with a "Brainstorming" session afterwards. See the pics.. Newline will be taking all our ideas and incorporating them into a 3 dimensional design in which we can all comment on in a user forum. They will base changes on feedback that they receive. I'll keep you posted when all this comes about.

Fun Night:
Thanks to all who
showed up at fun night. It was great to have a chance to just relax and
let it flow…We started out at Saugeen Central playing a little life size
Pong and finished with Russell’s rope game. It was a real hoot and a bit
of a work out. The vote was unanimous; the Lakeshore Racquet Club has the
best wings in town. After all the money was collected, the bill and
gratuity was paid, we had $5.75 left over which will go into the park.
J Special thanks to Lee and Andrea, they tossed in their winnings from the paintball pool to help pay for the veggie tray. Go to photos for a couple of pictures.

paid off. We had inliners, skaters and bikers show up to our most successful

Supporters Rock Town Hall:
On Monday, September 13th supporters
of the skate park came to support Dave, Conner and Ryan as they gave their
presentation to council. Up to 50 kids, parents, business owners packed
the council chambers and had a small glimpse of the proposal process. We
should expect to hear the results in 1-3 weeks. We were very proud of the way all the kids conducted themselves in a quiet and orderly manner. Thanks to all the kids and parents who have come out to support us. |
